Fall 2014 Diagnostic: Writing Sample
45-60 minutes

Carefully read “All Played Out” by Ron Turker, which was published in The New York Times on July 27, 2014. Next write a summary of three to four paragraphs in which you do the following:

1) Using your own words, summarize the article about the cost of teen sports. You’ll want to include an accurate paraphrase of the author’s main points as well as relevant supporting examples and details.

2) Evaluate how convincing the article is by examining its evidence, its logic, its word choices, and its tone.

3) Craft a well-written essay with smooth transitions between sentences and paragraphs, well-structured sentences and paragraphs, and correct citations.
